Chicago based Green Grocer plans to open on Greenville Avenue

Greenville Avenue is transforming into an epicurean shopping destination.

A Chicago grocer has picked a location on Greenville in the M Streets neighborhood to open only its second store.

With a fortuitous name of Green Grocer, the store that features organically grown and locally produced foods, has plans to open soon at 3614 Greenville Ave., according to a Facebook page.

Green is also the last name of co-founder Cassie Green.  In 2008, Green and her husband Gary Stephens opened their first store in their own neighborhood after being frustrated with shopping choices. The store is in West Town, an old Chicago neighborhood west of the loop that historically was settled by Eastern European immigrants.

The building on Greenville was formally a Canine Commissary and is in the same block with Gloria’s and one block north of the Granada Theater.

You already know that 16 blocks south on Greenville is where Trader Joe’s will open its first Dallas store early next year. And Wal-Mart is building a Neighborhood Market in the former Whole Foods and Blockbuster building a block from Trader Joe’s.

As far as Green Grocer goes, will ask the grocery entrepreneurs if they know Greenville Ave. was good enough for another organic start-up years ago. Whole Foods initial expansion outside of Austin in the 1980s was to Lower Greenville. Just saying, this could be the start of something big.
